Walking on Country
Walking on Country
Size - 91.4cm x 121.8cm
Canvas - Plaster - Acrylic Paint
Our mother earth plays an integral role in our lives. Our country sustains us, it is a part of us and it is where we belong. This piece represents our country, specifically Wiradjuri country. The boundary of Wiradjuri Nation extends from Coonabarabran in the north straddling the Great Dividing Range down to the Murray River and out to Western NSW.
The different textures represent the different terrains, the red dirt, rocks/gravel and ochre rocks. The black separating each section represents the paths that ancestors have paved/walked before us. Their sacrifices and knowledge have allowed us to be able to continue our culture today.
The different symbols carved into the sections represent several different things eg. meeting places, water holes, hunting grounds, campsites and agricultural knowledge.
This piece reminds us that whilst we are visitors to country, that it is our responsibility to continue to care for country as well as acknowledge the ancestors that went before us and continue to build our knowledge of country.
